Adding ratings to forums (including a 'Like' rating)
A forum can be set up to allow posts to be rated by both staff or students. In the Settings page for the forum, open the Ratings menu.
Choose the aggregate type (which is how the ratings will be totalled for each discussion). This can be: Average, Count (number of rated items becomes the final grade); Maximum (highest rating); Minimum (lowest rating); Sum (all ratings added together). Adding a rating automatically includes the forum in Gradebook, so please ensure the Gradebook is set up correctly if the rating applied is not intended to form part of the summative assessment for this unit.
Additional scale options can be set up from the Administration block: Site Administration> Grades> Scales> Add a new scale
At the top of this menu, you will see the Roles with permission to rate listing for this unit. In order to allow ratings by students, a permissions change is required - contact your School Learning Designer, Educational Support Officer or TaLS for advice.
Using the ratings scale to replicate a 'like' system on your forum
Replicating a 'like' system in forums may enable student engagement by encouraging interaction in this asynchronous tool.
In the Scale section, from the Type menu choose the option 'Scale', then in the Scale menu choose the option 'Like Scale'. In the Aggregate type section, choose Maximum rating.
Remember to check that students have permissions to rate posts. If not, contact your School Learning Designer, Educational Support Officer or TaLS for advice.
