UNE101

UNE101 is an online orientation and welcome to UNE. It helps prepare you to successfully transition into study. All new students, regardless of study mode, could benefit from completing the Online Orientation (UNE101) which is available through Moodle soon as you enrol in your units of study.

Information provided during Orientation includes:
  • tips on settling into university life,
  • introductions to using the Library and IT facilities, and
  • 'How To's' for accessing student support services.

Find more information and access the course from the Online Orientation page.

There are a variety of short courses available to you both to get you prepared for your studies and to draw on throughout your time with us. Refer to the Digital Dexterity : Online Learning module to explore these.

UNE Library

Use UNE Library to find, borrow, and request library resources for your study needs. Subject Guides offer guidance on how to find the best resources for research and study in your subject area. You can make an appointment with a Client Services Librarian for further help. Visit Library essentials for further information.

Below there is further information about your courses and units, general information for studying at UNE and electronic requirements for study. Make sure to look through these for continuing on.

Course and unit information is available via the UNE Handbook.

Unit Information

The UNE Handbook contains information including the unit description, unit coordinator(s), assessment information and learning outcomes, when and where the unit is offered, required texts, pre-requisites and any restrictions as well as information regarding intensive schools if applicable.

Assessment Tasks

A list of all summative assessments and the learning outcomes associated with each as well as details including the number of words (or equivalent), weight of each task and length of any exam is included. This information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period.

Learning outcomes

A list of the expected learning outcomes and their relationship to each assessment task is available.

Graduate attributes

UNE has a policy that identifies the special attributes of a UNE graduate. It is expected that during the course of your undergraduate or postgraduate degree you will develop these attributes in conjunction with your discipline knowledge. Graduate attributes for each course are available in the UNE Handbook.

Timetables

If you are enrolled as an on-campus student for your unit you will need the timetable for your lectures and/or tutorials. Timetables are available through the link on the 'myStudy' tab in myUNE or directly from the  timetables page.

Intensive schools

Intensive schools (previously known as Residential schools) are utilised in some units of study to provide extra teaching and assistance to students. Intensive schools can be classified as mandatory or non-mandatory. The dates for intensive schools for any particular unit of study can be found in the  UNE Handbook. For more detailed information see the intensive schools page along with the  Intensive schools policy  regarding intensive schools.

Policies

The Student Policies page contains a selection of policies and rules relating to your study at UNE. All policies and rules can be found on the  policies A-Z page.

Time management

Students are expected to devote 150 hours to each six credit point unit of study which they undertake at UNE. You need to structure your study time so that you devote this time to the unit over the course of the trimester.

See Digital Dexterity : Planning Your Study for tips and tricks.

Contacting UNE

If you have questions about the academic content of your unit, you should contact the unit coordinator or teaching staff for the unit. Check the forums in your unit first in case your question has already been answered. Also check your unit information to see if there is a preferred method of contact for the unit staff.

If you have administrative enquiries about your unit or course, you can contact UNE administrative staff directly via AskUNE or visit a member of the Student Services team in Dixson Library. Some teaching areas have administrative staff to assist students for enquiries specific to a unit. They can also be contacted using  AskUNE and may have phone contact as well. Refer to the unit information to determine if this is available for your unit.

Your contact details

It is important that you keep your contact details up-to-date with UNE. It is helpful for us to have your daytime telephone number in case we need to communicate with you urgently.

If you change your address or other contact details you can update them easily through myUNE. See How to update your details with a change of address for details.

Providing feedback on your unit

All students enrolled in each unit have an opportunity to provide anonymous feedback at the end of the trimester. We value your thoughts and encourage you to take this opportunity to let us know what you liked about each unit and/or help us improve it by telling us what you would like improved. You will be contacted via your UNE email with a link to the online survey and information about when it will be available towards the end of trimester.

Internet access

It is a requirement of UNE that all students have access to a suitable computer capable of sending and receiving UNE email, accessing UNE’s web sites and electronic library resources. Check the hardware requirements page to see the recommended minimum requirements that your computer should meet (together with links to download sites for some software), as well as checks that can be run on your computer for correct browser configuration and internet connection speed.  Contact the IT Service Desk if you have any questions.

Email

All students and staff are provided with a UNE email account. UNE uses this account to send information to you. You are required to check your UNE email once a week. You can check it using Webmail or you can forward your UNE emails to another email address. There are some tips for managing email on the 'Email' page in this site

Online etiquette and behaviour

The practices of courtesy and respect that apply in face-to-face contexts also apply online, and require even more attention. All students are expected to follow Cyberethics at UNE - Guidelines for students on online behaviour .

Exemptions for computer or online access

Students may claim an exemption from the requirement to have computer access only in certain circumstances. Generally these circumstances would be when:

  • You have a verifiable medical condition that prevents use of a computer.
  • You live in a remote location where internet access is not available.
  • You are currently in a correctional facility and are unable to access the internet.

If you wish to claim an exemption, contact Student Access and Inclusion, Student Wellness centre, by phoning (02) 6773 2897 or sending an email to accessinclusion@une.edu.au.
